Course Description:

Provides basic knowledge of computer use in today’s world with exercises using Microsoft Office software.  Focuses on using the computer to manage information, access the Internet, using modern day mobile devices like tablets and smartphones, as a method to telecommunicate and communicate with others. 

Student Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the evolution of computers.
  2. Explain essential elements of a computer system and the main types of application software.
  3. Utilize applications related to student's field of study or work.
  4. Relate significant ways that computers have had an impact on humankind, social institutions, and society as a whole.
  5. Examine privacy, ethics, telecommunications, and security issues created by the use of computers.
  6. Describe the Internet, search engines, and the process involved for emailing
  7. Demonstrate proficiency at an introductory level the Internet and five application software packages for a computer: word processing, spreadsheet, database, communications, and graphics.

Student Learning Outcomes

Students completing this course satisfactorily will be able to:

  1. Define computer terminology
  2. Explain essential elements of a computer system and main types of application software
  3. Demonstrate proficiency at an introductory level the Internet and five application software packages for a computer: word processing, spreadsheet, database, communications, and graphics

Course Format:

This course will be conducted online in an asynchronous format. Students will read material and perform tasks on their own.  Zoom sessions will not be scheduled except for the first day of class to provide an orientation and guidance in navigating your course, accessing your ebook and answer any questions or concerns you may have.  Attendance is optional.  The orientation will be recorded and posted in Canvas.  Details on how to access Canvas and Zoom are provided at the end of the Syllabus.
